A functional assessment is your comprehensive overall occupational therapy assessment that looks at all areas of daily living and your ability to perform all the tasks that you need or want to. We examine what supports you might benefit from and discuss ideas and make a plan with you on what you would like to move forward with! NDIS frequently request these assessments and use the reports to guide their understanding of the person and their needs.
Assistive technology is a fancy term to describe equipment that might help you in your everyday life. We can prescribe and request funding for larger items such as beds, wheelchairs, pressure care mattresses, mobility scooters, hoists and other lifting equipment. We can also recommend and help you to source smaller items that might help support you with cooking, cleaning, dressing or other troublesome tasks.
A manual handling plan is really important for anyone who is assisted by others or uses equipment to transfer or mobilise. A manual handling assessment can analyse what the safest and most efficient way to transfer or mobilise may be, and this can then be documented in the plan for all involved in the transfer, with training provided. Manual handling plans keep people and their carers safe.
Sometimes the physical environment, the social environment, and the supports available in your accommodation don't meet your needs, or maximise your potential. A living options assessment gives you all of what a functional assessment does, and analyses options available for living arrangements that may suit. This assessment may be particularly appropriate where a person is considering whether arrangements such as Supported Independent Living (SIL), Individualised Living Options (ILO) or Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA) may be right for them and want to explore this further.
Often the barrier to people completing daily living tasks and having independence in these is their physical environment. Occupational Therapists with additional certifications to prescribe Home Modifications can discuss these barriers with you and find a solution that may include major or minor works to be completed by a builder.
Being able to travel is an essential part of everyday life, and for many being able to travel in their own vehicle is a key part of having independence, autonomy and freedom. Our occupational therapists can assist you with trialling and prescribing vehicle modifications suitable for your needs if you are a passenger in the vehicle, needing a way to get in and out.
Please note that we do not prescribe driver controls at this point in time.
People of all ages receive occupational therapy sessions to build their skills and independence in tasks of their choosing. We provide therapy for all ages, including early intervention services. Referrals for therapy start with an initial assessment where the goal setting for the therapy occurs and a baseline is established. We can then compare progress to this baseline along the journey.
Utilising a therapy assistant is an excellent way to get the most out of your therapy budget. Our therapy assistants are university students who have completed a significant portion of their OT degree and placements already. A therapy assistant works under the guidance of a qualified occupational therapist, carrying out the therapist's plan with the person and checking in with the therapist regularly.
Our services are not limited to the above! Please ask us for other services, tailored services you may require, or more information.
